Musician: Susan “Sue” Lyons

Susan Lyons, is originally from Washington, D.C. and currently resides North Brookfield, MA. She has been playing music since she was a small child. Her father, Lynn Lyons, Sr. was an attorney by day with the U.S. Government in Washington, D.C.  and a union pianist during the evenings accompanying orchestral big bands like the Dorsey Brothers, as they toured through the Metropolitan D. C. area.

As a result of her father’s influence, Susan began playing percussion, drums, at age 10. In her late teens and 20’s she accompanied her father playing jazz and also played with rock bands in the Maryland/D.C. area. When Susan reached her teens, her musical inspirations began to change from percussion to folk music and she taught herself to play acoustic and electric guitar. She learned folk songs by Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Woody Guthrie and others and also became an avid Beatle fan as did most adolescents during that time. As years passed, Susan performed as a solo folk singer/performer in the Washington area playing at venues like the Sword and Stone Coffeehouse in Georgetown and the Childe Herald on Dupont Circle in Washington, D.C.

After moving to Boston, Massachusetts in the late 70’s, Susan began performing in Cambridge, MA at various folk venues around the Harvard Square area. She played at Passim’s Coffeehouse in Harvard Square, the No Name Coffeehouse, the Grog in Newburyport, and venues on Cape Cod and in New Hampshire.
